2024 Turf Mile Stakes Handicapping

With exactly one month to go until the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, this weekend offers up a slew of ‘Win and You’re In’ races across the US, including the (G1) Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneand.

As well as the lion’s share of the $1.25 million purse, the Turf Mile also will also provide the winner with automatic fees-paid entry to the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Mile, to be held on November 4 at Del Mar Racetrack.

Open to horses age three and older, the race has drawn an excellent field of nine entries, including two shipping over from the UK and Ireland to take their shot at cracking the Breeders’ Cup lineup.

2024 Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Carl Spackler Race Odds: 2-1

Ultra-consistant Carl Spackler has won five of his past six races and six of nine overall, with five of his wins coming at this one-mile distanceAfter starts his career breaking his maiden at Gulfstream Park he’s recorded wins at Churchill Downs and Saratoga, which this being his Keeneland debut.

He comes in off a very convincing 3 1/2 length win in the (G1) Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga two months ago.

2024 Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: More Than Looks Race Odds: 3-1

Making just his second start since running a close-up sixth in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile, More Than Looks was second to Carl Spackler in the Fourstardave, coming off a layoff of more than nine months.

He’s won four-of-nine lifetime with two other runner-up finishes. Both of those came at this one mile distance, where he also has two wins. He already has a one-mile Grade 3 win under his saddle, here he tries for his first Grade 1.

Mountain Bear Race Odds: 6-1

While almost all of his racing has taken place the UK and Ireland, Mountain Bear did come over the Atlantic last year and finished second in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

He only has two wins and three in-the-money finishes in 13 lifetime starts, but only four of his races have been at the distance and he’s hit the board in three of those. He was third last out in a one-mile Group 2 event in Ireland, but only a head back of a horse that went on to win its next race.

Running Bee Race Odds: 12-1

The only other time Running Bee tried this one-mile distance his 13-race career he finished second, here he shortens up after a recent stakes win going 1 1/16 miles.

He has shown the ability to have early speed in past races, and it might be worthwhile to note he’s a perfect two-for-two on the Keeneland turf.

It will be interesting to see how the pace scenario plays out in this race, as there are no real need-the-lead types in the field, but several that like to sit and stalk just off the pace. That being the case, whoever does get to the front early may just do so by default.

Based on recent form and his dominance at the distance, I have to give the nod to Carl Spackler for the win.

But at the same time I think Mountain Bear is interesting and offers better value. With sunny and warm weather in Lexington all weekend, the turf course should be firm. Of the two foreign invaders – the other is Kikkuli (4-1) –  I think he’s more likely to appreciate solid footing, and his recent races overseas may just be a step above what he faces here.
