Friday offers up Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves. Dallas stole home court with a gritty come-from-behind 108-105 victory in the opener of the series.

Season Series

Last season the Wolves held the advantage, winning two of the three regular-season meetings and were equally successful this season taking the series 3-1. Dallas holds the all-time record between the squads with 77 victories in 136 matches.

The teams met just once before in the postseason in 2002 when first-round series were the best of five games with Dallas sweeping 3-0.

*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Thursday, May 23rd. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Friday, May 24th.

Dallas Mavericks

Players will tell you they don’t pay attention to what the media or other players say about them, but they do. Evidence of that fact was on display in Game 1 when Kyrie Irving went off from the tip.

Anthony Edwards announced he would be guarding him (not once but twice) in his post-game interview following the Wolves wrapping up the series against the Nuggets.

Irving cooled off in the second half but Luka Doncic took over to seal the win.

Mavericks Stats

Dallas ranked eighth offensively (117.0) and 18th in defensive rating (114.9) with a net differential of plus +2.1 that ranked 15th overall.

To this point in the playoffs, Dallas ranks seventh offensively (113.9) and sixth defensively (110.6) with a plus +3.3 net differential ranking fifth.

The Mavericks perform well against the spread with a 56-39 record through 95 contests this season.

Mavericks Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

  • Luka Doncic, PG (probable — knee)
  • Maxi Kleber, PF (OUT indefinitely — shoulder)
  • Olivier-Maxence Prosper, PF (OUT indefinitely ankle)

Minnesota Timberwolves

AntMan got an immediate lesson in ‘be careful what you wish for’ when Irving showed him why he’s considered one of the most difficult players to guard in the NBA.

Edwards was exhausted by the end of that match and had nothing in the tank to attack the basket where he’s most dangerous.

The major issue in Game 1 was the Wolves’ insistence on playing Gobert in the drop coverage allowing Luka to dissect them with lobs to Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II.

That should be one of the key adjustments Chris Finch makes in Game 2.

Timberwolves Stats

Through the regular season, Minnesota ranked tied for 17th on offense (120.8) and first defensively (105.5) while they were a plus +15.3 net differential, ranking third overall.

In the playoffs, the Wolves rank sixth offensively (115.6), and fourth defensively (108.1) with a plus +7.5 net differential ranking second overall.

The Wolves rode the middle with a 48-45-1 record against the spread through 94 matches this season.

Timberwolves Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

  • Mike Conley, PG (probable — calf)

Free  Dallas Mavericks vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:

Several Wolves commented on how fatigued they were in Game 1, and while they did just come off a physical Game 7 where they erased a 20-point deficit it felt more like it was mental exhaustion.

Regardless, Finch called out his team stating it was one of the few times this season where his team didn’t play hard and lacked focus/energy.

They know falling into a 0-2 hole in the series with the next two games in Texas won’t cut it so expect them to bring energy from the tip. Also, watch for changes to how they defend, a more concerted effort to crash the boards, and for Edwards to pick his moments to defend Irving.

Meanwhile, the Mavs are playing with house money already grabbing the split and knowing another win would put them fully in the driver’s seat.
