Only a few months have passed since the “Here & Now” exhibition at JD Malat Gallery, in which Horacio Quiroz took part alongside other contemporary artists. And this fall, from September 12 to October 5, the Mexican artist is back in London with his solo exhibition titled “Cosmic Debris.” This time, Quiroz has brought to the gallery a new series of paintings, offering a unique reinterpretation of Greek mythology themes in the context of modern issues and fluid identity debates.
Creative Activity of Horacio Quiroz
Horacio Quiroz was born in Mexico City in 1977 and started his career in art in 2013. He has no formal education in arts but is regarded as one of the most talented contemporary Mexican artists with a unique approach to subversive themes of gender, identity, and sexuality. His recognizable visual language of grotesque, compositional forms is aimed at challenging the conventional human perception of form and celebrating diversity.
One of the main themes in Horacio Quiroz’s creative activity is sexuality and identity; the artist uses visual techniques to communicate his vision of the fluid state of being and human transformations on multiple levels. Quiroz has also dwelt on the environmental themes in some of his paintings, such as “Ecosystem,” “Purgatory of Consumption,” and the memorable “Poisoning” that dwells on the dangers of environmental degradation.
