Game 5 of the conference semi-finals between the third-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves and second-seeded Denver Nuggets occurs on Tuesday. Denver stole back home-court advantage by returning the favor winning both games in Minny including their 115-107 victory on Sunday.

Season Series

For the past two seasons, these teams have split the season series each winning twice. Denver holds the all-time record between the squads with 89 victories in 145 matches.

This is the third time in franchise history the teams are meeting in the postseason with each side having advanced via a gentleman’s sweep in the first round.

The most recent meeting occurred last season in the Nuggets title run, and notably, afterward, Michael Malone said it was the toughest test they faced.

*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, on Monday, May 13th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Tuesday, May 14th.

Minnesota Timberwolves

As I noted in the previous preview the Timberwolves have a bad habit of allowing their defense to affect their offense. Other than Anthony Edwards the Wolves seemed out of rhythm on that side of the hardwood.

Karl-Anthony Towns has historically struggled when under the spotlight and was particularly bad in the two games in Minny. He took only seven shots in Game 3 and was 5 for 18 in Game 4.

AntMan delivered with 44 points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block and while five others reached double-digit scoring they were all in the 11 to 15-point range.

Timberwolves Stats

Through the regular season, Minnesota ranked tied for 17th on offense (120.8) and first defensively (105.5) while they were a plus +15.3 net differential, ranking third overall.

In the playoffs, the Wolves rank tied for third offensively (117.1), and seventh defensively (110.3) with a plus +6.8 net differential ranking third overall.

The Wolves rode the middle with a 46-43-1 record against the spread through 90 matches this season.

Timberwolves Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

Denver Nuggets

The past two games of this series reminded of what happens when you wake a sleeping giant – – and by that I mean the Nuggets team as a whole. Coach Michael Malone compiled all the talking heads statements about the series being over and his team responded.

In fact, up until those games we truly hadn’t witnessed the best of Denver but they’re woke now and Minny is the team with all the pressure on their shoulders.

A perfect example of championship pedigree occurred at the end of the half in Game 4 when the Nuggets scored eight consecutive points in the final minute including two Wolves’ turnovers. That they won the match by eight points only punctuates the point.

Nuggets Stats

In the season, Denver ranked fifth offensively (117.8) and eighth defensively (112.3) with a net differential of plus +5.5 ranking fourth overall.

This postseason, the Nuggets rank eighth offensively (112.5) and sixth defensively (110.2) with a plus +2.3 net differential ranking seventh.

Despite their overall placement, the Nuggets aren’t as solid against the spread with a 42-47-2 record through 91 contests.

Nuggets Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

  • Vlatko Cancar, SF (OUT indefinitely knee)

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction:

For Minnesota to keep the road winning streak alive they’ll need a better effort from KAT and the others because Edwards can’t do it alone. The problem is Denver has awoken and even their bench is playing with confidence now.

More importantly, the Big 3 of Denver (Jokic, Murray, Gordon) are outplaying the Wolves Big 3 (Edwards, KAT, Gobert) and I won’t be surprised if the reigning champs go on to win the next two games and finish this in six.
